Do Different Things To Speak in English

Key Takeaways

  • To improve your English speaking skills, you need to change your approach and try new things, rather than repeating the same methods that haven't worked in the past, as the speaker notes, 'if you want output different, change your input'.
  • The way you learn English, often focused on written English, may not be effective for spoken English, and you may need to relearn grammar and vocabulary in a different way to become fluent in speaking.
  • Simply increasing the amount of time you spend on the same activities won't lead to improvement, as the speaker explains, 'we try to multiply those things previously... but that is not going to happen'.
  • The concept of 'insanity' - doing the same things over and over and expecting different results - applies to English speaking, and to make progress, you need to break this cycle and try a new approach.
  • To become confident in speaking English, you need to use grammar rules and vocabulary in a different way, and be open to changing your habits and methods, as the speaker advises, 'change the things that you are doing, do different things'.

One definition of insanity is doing same things again and again but expecting different results each time that is being performed. What does that mean and how it relates to English speaking? Let me tell you.

What happens is we learn English in a particular way, we use it in a particular way and then we try to speak with whatever knowledge we have got through various ways. Now what happens is that knowledge, that knowledge was not for spoken English, mostly that knowledge was for written English.

Now here the things become complicated. We learn things in a particular way, but in reality we wanted or we needed it to learn in a very different way when we are talking about speaking in English or spoken English.

So what happens when we are not able to speak in English? We try to do same things that we did for say 5-10 years. We try to do those same things again and again. Only what we do, we multiply those things previously. Say for example, we are doing it for 30 minutes, now we try to do it for 60 minutes, one hour, 2 hour.

We try to multiply those things that did not work in the past. Respect those same things would give us the results that we want of good speaking ability. That is not going to happen. We have to understand this law of nature, input and output. If you want output different, change your input.

Till the time you don't change your input, your output is not going to change. This is very much applicable to English speaking.

You need to relearn all the English. You need to relearn all the grammar, you need to relearn the way you use those that knowledge of grammar and English in a very different manner. Then that is going to produce good spoken English for you.

That's why I said if you keep on doing same things that you were doing, you are going to get same results that you are getting. You want to change the result.

You want to be better at English speaking. You want to become fluent in English speaking. Change the things that you are doing. Do different things, Do things differently. Use things differently.

Use grammar rules differently. Use different grammar rules altogether. Then and there only you will be able to speak. In confident English.
